“You can’t go,” Sophia begged as she took hold of Taron’s hand.

The boy stopped and turned to the girl. “I will be back soon,” he assured her. “Wait here for me, don’t go anywhere.”

Before she could stop him, Taron dashed back to the city. Sophia stood there, her hand lifted slightly as if reaching for him. Would he really make it back? The city was in such disarray that she was sure he would be killed in the fighting.

The day slowly dragged on as Sophia waited under the tree by the pond. She tugged on the grass at her feet or threw pebbles into the water.

Noon passed without Taron. Her worry grew with each passing hour. He wasn’t a large boy; he was only just becoming a man. With a sigh, Sophia resigned herself to a nap among the roots of the tree.

Movement beyond the pond woke Sophia with a start. Sitting up she quickly stood and looked around. The night had closed in around her while she slept. Where was Taron?

The noise grew louder as Sophia tried to see into the dark. Suddenly orange light appeared in her vision. Strange faces, eerily lit by the torches carried before them, separated from the dark abyss of the forest beyond. She recognized none of them.

Hoping they hadn’t seen her she quickly ran to the other side of the tree and crouched low to the ground. With all the unrest in the city bandits could roam the forest and possibly even the city streets without being stopped.

Their voices drifted to her ears as she breathed through her mouth, trying to keep as quiet as possible.

“I tell you I saw someone out here earlier. It was a lovely young girl. She would make a nice little bed warmer.” The men laughed at this.

“Well let’s hope she’s still here. You promised Erian your prize in the forest and now he’s dead set on having it. If she’s not here now we’ll leave you to explain why we came back empty-handed.”

“Yeah, Marcus, don’t think we’ll stick up for you like last time. I still have the welts on my back.”

As they grew quiet Sophia could hear their footsteps near the tree. Her heart pounded in her throat. Rustling of leather shoes on grass sounded next to her and she looked up. Looming over her was a man with a large scar crossing over his hairless head. He smiled a toothy grin as he reached down and grabbed her by the arm before she could move.

“I found her!” he called to his companions.
This is an excerpt I wrote some time ago for a story I've been tinkering with for two years now.

This excerpt won't have much meaning to anyone but myself at the moment. I'm using this story as my NaNoWriMo entry for this year in hopes that I can finally get it written.

If you've read much about how to create a story you might've heard about doors. In stories there are doors that the protagonist opens and walks through. Once they do that things take a turn. The doors are most usually found between the beginning and middle and the middle and end. But there can be smaller doors, or window in each of the three parts.

This excerpt is a door for my character Sophia. This makes way for the middle of the story. It'll be four more years before she will see Teron again and by then she'll be 18 and he'll have changed drastically.

I really enjoyed reading this, even though it's not the beginning of your story it's a great launching point you know? A little promo piece. Bandits, upheaval, and two young people caught up in the events of their world. Good piece and it definitely meant something the writing was very precise and I especially liked the dialogue choice.
